What do acoustic consultants really do
Posted on February 10th, 2010 No commentsNoise pollution is becoming quite a huge issue in most built-up environments these days & recently I’ve begun to think that maybe an acoustic consultant could do something to reduce noise levels.
As it turns out, continuous noise pollution is not as much of a problem as sudden peaks and troughs although in the work place, steady noise that isn’t particularly loud is quite often a problem and can give rise to partial deafness.
One of the most important human aspects of noise is that it has a detrimental impact on sleep and steady low-level sleep deprivation is very detrimental to psychological and thus physical health.
To an Acoustic consultant this will be familiar territory. They use the latest acoustic technology to log sound levels & pin point sources of noise. By designing buildings to absorb noise energy they can significantly enhance the quality of life for people and thus improve their health as well.
One common problem is due to jet plane sound levels, particularly near busy international airports like London Heathrow where jets come in low over inhabited areas. Even though there usually are some controls on take off and landing times, major international and national airports tend to operate virtually twenty-four hours a day. Noise consultants are sometimes being used by airport noise objectors now to monitor volume levels and then to act as experts in environmental assessment studies.
